Try to run SpeedFan with the following command line switch:

/NONVIDIAI2C

Might it be you are running SpeedFan together with some other similar tool?

I created a beta for you to try. Please, contact me by email.
I would like to tell you that you are the only one to report a freeze that might be due to AMD K8 support. There are really a lot of users out there that never had any issue with SpeedFan's AMD K8 support so it is unlikely to be the culprit of a crash. On the other side, SpeedFan sometimes makes more evident some latent issues. Much like a system where a driver or the RAM is buggy, but that never crashes until you access that driver of stress the RAM.
The "ERROR collecting CPU usage" issue is non-blocking one (you simply lose CPU usage bars) and depends on a registry key that was changed somewhere. If it changed recently, this means that something else (not SpeedFan) did it.

Hi Brian,

I once made a mistake by installing Speedfan over an existing installation, and CPU-Usage didn

Sorry if I ask. You reinstalled Windows after you swapped the motherboard, isn't it?

When running the latest beta with the /NOAMDK8SCAN, K8 internal core temperatures would disappear. Do you still see your system as unstable?
Can you confirm that using SpeedFan 4.28 allows you to experience a stable system?

I can find no new feature, apart from the K8 internal sensor, that could be applied to your motherboard. I can't figure out why version 4.28 is running fine and 4.29 exposes instabilities. Could you UPLOAD here the result of a SEND REPORT?

I really can't see any reason why SpeedFan 4.28 should be stable and 4.29 shouldn't on your system. I will try to figure out a reason but my guess is that it isn't SpeedFan the cause for the instability.

I am experiencing a similar problem with the same motherboard; because I was having stability issues (BSOD's/freezes) with my system for a while now, I decided to re-install Windows.
Because I have a pretty noisy PWM fan in my PC, I use SpeedFan to control its speeds. The system was running very smooth until the moment I installed speedfan... this is what I installed:

* Windows XP Pro with SP2 integrated
* Highpoint RocketRaid 2300 driver 1.1 (non-WHQL)
<reboot>
* WinRar 3.60
* Uli Integrated Driver 2.20 (AGP & Ethernet, both WHQL)
<reboot>
* Nvidia Driver 91.47 (WHQL)
<reboot>
* Windows Updates (part 1)
<reboot>
* Windows Updates (part 2)
<reboot>
* FireFox 1.5.0.7
<reboot, image>
* SpeedFan 4.30
* Installed speedfan as service with NT Wrapper Lite
<reboot>

Crash 1 while browsing with firefox> - First windows freezes, then a BSOD occurs error 0x000000F4
<reboot>
<Crash 2 while browsing with firefox> - First windows freezes, then a BSOD occurs 0x000000F4
<crash reboot>

First Windows freezes, but I am still able to move the mouse. Mouse clicks do no longer respond. During that, the Harddisk LED is burning, and speedfan displays a HD temperature of 0 degrees. Then the mouse freezes. After a minute or so, a BSOD appears.

I did not use any special command line switches to start speedfan. I had for a while on my previous windows, but it didn't make any difference as far as stability was concerned in that install.

Now I am running SpeedFan 4.28 to see if that stops the freezes. No real CPU temp though in that version ** sniff **.

If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. This is my system setup:

Asrock 939DUAL-VISTA BIOS 1.30
AMD Athlon 4800+
Gainward Geforce 7800GS+ BLISS
2 * 1GB Corsair CL2 (set in bios as CL 2.5, 1T, others auto or default)
Highpoint RocketRaid 2300 with 4x400GB WD SE16 in RAID5
1xWD Raptor 74GB connected to SATA II, IDE mode, strong setting
Enermax Liberty 500W
Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1712
NEC DVD-RW ND-4571A

Note: Added 2 attachments with the windows BSOD mini-dumps.

I am sorry to say that the note I added to this bug, that I thought was caused by speedfan, is not caused by speedfan at all.

Just for who is interested...
The problem turns out to be a hardware malfunction on the motherboard. I think the SATA II adapter is broken. I can reproduce the issue now with a clean windows, that has only the AGP driver, the graphical card driver & 3DMark 2006 installed. My MB WILL crash during 3DMark 2006, while it is loading the next test (so never during a test !?).

Sorry to bother you with this.

I googled for "0x000000F4" and found several interesting pointers. The one at ExpertExchange is one of my favourite ones.

Survivor1979, you added a note a few seconds before I did :-)
I'm (sort of) "happy" to read what you write. I didn't write it in my previous note, but I thought that the failure was hard disk related. Keep me updated.

Problem solved unfortunately I don't know why,
I reinstalled windows and everything was fine for a while, and then the CPU usage disapeared and with it came the problems again, I then did a windows repair as I coudn't be bothered to install all the other programms again, this time everything is working fine, even core temp.
